JUNGLE GYM Gymnasium & Botanic Garden

Student Work: Senior Project Concept

Inspired by the recent trend of incorporating Botanic Gardens into public spaces as seen in Singapore's Changi Airport, JUNGLE GYM seeks to re-define the standard model of what a gym should be.  Based on connections to nature, rather than current fitness and professional trainer-based archetypes, JUNGLE GYM seeks to motivate through both grand and intimate connections to the natural world throughout.

Jungle Gym seeks to change the dynamic of what a gym can functionally be.  Boulders, trees, landscaping and raw earth materials will transport the user to a lush and immersive natural environment.  Jungle Gym will be a synthesis of a workout facility and a botanic garden, bringing nature into virtually every space.

The main attraction will be the Yakushima Cloud Forest.  This feature is a five story, fully forested and landscaped, faux mountain that serves as the centerpiece of the project.  Highly visible from the street, the Cloud Forest will become a major attraction that will drive membership sales.

Alongside state-of-the-art fitness equipment and experiences and named after prominent forests and jungles of the world, the Yakushima Cloud Forest will feature the Kinubalu Summit Climbing Adventure, the Shinrin Yoku Forest Walk, and Iguazu Falls.  The facility will also offer the Bukit Timah Nature Spa, the Lacandon Jungle Cafe, the Waipoua Kids Gym, the Oasis Lounge, the Tree of Life Cardio Area, the Skyview Spin Studio, and Supporting Administrative and Maintenance Facilities.

Jungle Gym will be located in a pre-existing suburban strip mall.  The project will seek to inject life and vibrancy back into older retail developments and take advantage of pre-existing spaces to not only revitalize the area, but to provide workout facilities that are closer to people’s daily routines.
